Volkshotel Wibautstraat 150 020 2612 100, volkshotel.nl; metro to Wibautstraat; map. These unique digs were once a newspaper headquarters, but don’t be deterred by the bland 1970s exterior: the 172 rooms are a quirky hybrid of wood, glass and concrete. Nine “special” rooms take things to another level entirely: the “Soixante Neuf” even has a bed suspended from the ceiling. Other perks include a rooftop sauna and hot tub, plus yoga lessons three times a week for €11. €140
Vondel Vondelstraat 26 020 612 0120, hotelvondel.com; tram #1, #2 or #5 to Leidseplein, then walk across the bridge; map. Seven conjoined townhouses form this cool and sleek boutique option with plush public areas. Rooms – available as singles, doubles, triples and an apartment – are more pared back, with light, natural wood and minimalist furniture. Rooms are good value, but breakfast – albeit delicious – is expensive (€19.95). €208
The outer districts
Hilton Amsterdam Apollolaan 138, Nieuw Zuid 020 710 6000, bit.ly/HiltonAmsterdamHotel; tram #5 or to Apollolaan; map. Way outside the centre by a canal in the distinctly upmarket Nieuw Zuid district, this hotel has all the facilities you could hope for, from lounge bar, café and health club through to an Italian restaurant. Mainly attracting a business-oriented clientele, it’s only really worth considering if you can afford to soak up a bit of 1960s nostalgia in its stunning “John and Yoko” suite (€1499), where the couple held their famous 1969 “Bed-In” for peace. €230
Hostels
Handy if you’re on a tight budget, the least expensive central option is to book a dorm bed in a hostel. Most hostels will provide clean bed linen, but may charge extra for a towel. Many places also lock guests out for a short period each day to clean, and a few demand a minimum two-night stay at weekends. Many hostels also offer triples, doubles and singles for much less than you’d pay in a regular hotel – though the quality and size varies dramatically. All of the hostels listed below have free wi-fi, at least in the public areas. Most include some sort of breakfast, with white bread, jam, cereals, tea and coffee, but it’s usually pretty basic.
The Old Centre
Bob’s Youth Hostel Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal 92 020 623 0063, bobsyouthhostel.nl; 10min walk from CS; map. An old favourite with backpackers, Bob’s is a lively place with small, basic four- to twenty-bed dorms livened up with graffiti. Breakfast is taken in the artsy coffeeshop on the ground floor. However, they kick everyone out at 10.30am to clean, which is not so good if you want a lie-in. Walk-ins welcome. Dorms €30
Flying Pig Downtown Nieuwendijk 100 020 420 6822, flyingpig.nl; 5min walk from CS; map. Clean, large and well run by ex-travellers familiar with the needs of backpackers. Free use of kitchen facilities, no curfew, shuttles to the beach in summer, and the hostel bar is open practically all night. It’s justifiably popular, and a very good deal, with mixed dorms, some of which have queen-sized bunks sleeping two. During peak season you’ll need to book well in advance.
